What it is

Tesamorelin is a growth-hormone-releasing hormone analog. It signals the pituitary gland to release growth hormone, which in turn reduces deep abdominal (visceral) fat.

What the research shows

The FDA approved tesamorelin in 2010 as Egrifta to reduce excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV who have lipodystrophy. Clinical trials showed reductions in visceral fat. Other uses are off-label.

How it's used

Tesamorelin is commonly supplied as a 2.0 mL vial at 5.0 mg/mL. A typical dose is 1.0 mg (20 units), injected under the skin, once daily. Your prescriber sets your exact dose and schedule.
